Harpreet Kaur

Overview

Harpreet practices in the area of family law, she has particular interest in complex family cases and is regularly instructed in these matters. She has successfully represented clients in family matters from the Family Courts through to the Royal Courts of Justice.

She is a very passionate and committed solicitor who takes great pride in representing and promoting her clients’ best interests in all cases.   She is particularly good at developing a close working relationship with her clients from the outset and obtaining the trust and confidence of her clients whilst also providing them with a sense of calm and stability in often very trying circumstances.

Harpreet is good at assessing the strengths and weaknesses of her client’s case and places great emphasis on the importance of listening and absorbing the client’s views. She also shares a close working partnership with the experienced team of barristers that she instructs to represent her clients at court and recognises the value of teamwork and values barristers input throughout the duration of the case until conclusion.

Her case preparation is known to be exceptionally thorough and she adopts a very meticulous approach to ensure that her client’s case is managed smoothly and efficiently.

She has been praised for developing a strong and positive rapport with clients and providing a warm and empathetic approach to her clients in family law matters which are often sensitive. She is particularly skilled in giving sympathetic yet realistic and practical advice to her clients. She strives to achieve the best outcome and to bring cases to a successful conclusion.

Children (public law)

Harpreet has experience in public law cases and is regularly instructed by parents and extended family members in care proceedings brought by the Local Authority and Children’s Social Services. She has a particular interest in dealing with and representing clients in complex public law matters. She has successfully defended a number of complex and serious care proceedings cases against the local authority.

Harpreet first started doing cases involving children in the care of the local authority when she first joined the firm. She found that she enjoyed the work and became committed to representing parents whose children had been removed from their care and parents who were being taken to Court by Social Services.

Her practice and client base in this area has continued to flourish and she has been noted for her outstanding client care skills and experience in complex and sensitive care matters and with representing and communicating with a number of vulnerable clients who have learning disabilities and cognitive issues.

Harpreet has considerable experience and is regularly instructed on behalf of parents and extended family members in complex cases involving the following issues:

  • Cases involving allegations of serious and multiple injuries and abuse to a child, non-accidental injury, fabricated/ factitious illness and induced illness
  • Cases involving allegations of abuse and longstanding neglect
  • Complex medical evidence and disputed medical evidence
  • Foreign international elements, including consideration of placement abroad
  • Special Guardianship matters
  • Matters involving historical issues before the Royal Courts of Justice

Children (private law)

Harpreet has a thriving private law practice, representing parents, grandparents, and family members.

She has secured Child Arrangements orders relating to live with orders and contact orders.  Specific Issue Orders for international relocation and education outside of the United Kingdom.  Prohibited Steps orders to prevent the removal of a child from the jurisdiction.

She has also represented extended family members to include grandparents and other family members in securing Child Arrangements Orders and orders acquiring parental responsibility for a child of the family and Orders confirming that the child of the family lives with the extended family member.

Harpreet also undertakes domestic violence work and has secured Non-Molestation and Occupation orders for persons who have been victims of domestic violence to secure the safety of them and their children.

Her private law work often encompasses serious and complex matters involving non-accidental injuries, serious allegations of harm and abuse and neglect as well as complex finding of fact hearings.

Her private law work also often involves matters relating to implacable hostility, intractable contact, parental alienation, international, cultural and religious matters.

Divorce and Finances

Harpreet also undertakes private divorce, annulment and financial matters. She has successfully represented in matters involving mid to high-value divorce.  She also has experience with matters involving international elements where matrimonial assets are located within and outside of the United Kingdom of England and Wales. She also has experience with respect to Worldwide Freezing Orders to freeze and protect matrimonial assets.  She is able to negotiate amicably and swiftly in Divorce and financial matters in order to reach the best settlement in the interests of her clients.

Wardship and International Children Matters

Harpreet also has experience with Wardship and International Child abduction matters before the Royal Courts of Justice.  She has dealt with matters involving removal of a child to and from Hague and non-Hague Convention Countries and international Cross-Jurisdictional contact and residence matters.

Background

Harpreet graduated with an LLB Honours Degree in 2013. She subsequently completed a Post Graduate Degree in legal practice (LPC) in 2014 and obtained a Distinction in her Postgraduate Degree.

Harpreet joined Sweetman Burke in April 2015 and was offered a training contract by November 2015. She completed her training contract at the firm then qualified as a solicitor in April 2017. Since then, she has developed a diverse practice and her client base has flourished.

In June 2019, Harpreet completed the Notarial Practice Course where she studied Roman law, Private International Law and Notarial Practice.
